Q: My job has me on a large monitor all day, and I am finding my progressive glasses just not easy to use anymore. They are fine for driving and for close up reading, but my computer seems to be an issue. What should I do?
A: First, let’s be sure everyone knows what “progressive lenses” are. While first developed in the 70’s in France, the early designs to replace bifocals with lines were very limited. Now days, progressives give you clear distance vision in the top, and focus closer and closer as you move your eyes downward. These are the primary design we all use for patietns over 40 with reading problems, and are very good for both distance and near.
Progressive lenses also allow us to customize the design for specific vision needs. In other words, you are like many, many patients who spend hours staring at digital screens all day. And those monitors, no matter how big, or how many you may have on your desk, are generally further away from your eyes than, say the book you may enjoy reading at home. And unlike your favorite book, your screen/s are also higher up……generally at eye level, not down on your lap.
Technology lenses are specialized progressives that give your larger central vision area clear focus for your screen/s……not for driving your car. These specialized lenses are ideal for better vision and much better comfort when using a digital device. In fact, comfort more than clarity is what most people love about them! Yes, these are for that specific vision job, not for general all use. From personal experience, I can tell you I love mine and keep them on my desk at the office. At the end of the day, I pop on my general life progrssives and drive home. The world today is simply more demanding visually, and for many people that means two pairs of glasses.
So unless you plan to change jobs ( just kidding ), ask your eye doctor about technology lenses at your next eye exam. I sincerely believe you will be pleasantly surprised how comfortable your vision at work can be again!
